Mulies seem the most prone to getting strong once they hit winter feed. Haven't had a bad November whitetail yet, but I have had a couple of strong mulies, both from late Nov. in the mountains. Prairie mulies on cropland don't seem to get that way, I think it is the mountain animals hitting the pine in those areas that does that. That's my theory anyhow.
You could well be right about the feed being part of the problem. The cropland Alberta deer have always tasted wonderful, bucks in rut even..although the steaks were marinated in Kraft Italian salad dressing first.

Late season moose have never tasted off to me, but perhaps their diet is more consistant. I have noticed that moose liver can really be great, or just terrible tasting. I think that may depend some on their diet, although I'm not positive why there can be a vast taste difference.
