GM Goodwrench engines

After this latest heat wave I have to face the fact the engine in my pickup is getting tired. I was trying hard to get to half a million kilometers out of it but I may fall a few thousand short. While the compression is still good - ~125 psi on all cylinders - the bearings are getting loose and an hour running in the heat drops the oil pressure to about 10 psi at idle. This coupled with the fact the clutch is getting a little soft has promoted me to consider a transplant before firewood/hunting season begins.

Anyone have any experience with the GM crate engines? ? The one I am looking at is an all-new 350 TBI engine with all the tin and harmonic damper in place.

The 3 year 160,000 km warranty sounds pretty attractive and the landed cost actually comes in slightly lower than a quality remanufactured engine with similar warranty. ($2450.00 Cnd delivered to the local GM dealership)

Any comments?

I would rather have a GM manufactured engine with "Genuine GM Parts" than one put together with "jobber" parts. (If I had to have a GM in the first place!)

We have installed lots of targetmasters ( new 350's) over the years and have yet to have any problem.

My personal choice would be a LUK

Ford, GM, Chrysler ................. make doesn't seem to matter.

Simple preventative maintenance is all that counts. I like my Chevy's but truth be told I think I have owned more Fords in the last 35 years. I have never had a pickup go less than 300,000 km and most much more than that. This current pickup is special to me as I have never owned a truck that served my needs so well. (Although I really like my little Mitsubishi too! )

Smile trans

Sounds like a pretty decent price -- it cost me $1,200 (including balancing) for my last 350 but I did 80% of the work myself.
