Power back on now after the big wind storm here on the Island. Apparently 100,000 were without power after it reeked havoc on Friday. Rain was relentless as well, being driven sideways from the wind.
A friend down the road from me had three good size trees go down, across the power lines, (naturally

). They also blocked the road completely, so for several residents they remained homebound. Least it was a holiday, and they didn't miss work.
I have over 60 good size trees on my property, and was happily surprised they all withstood the onslaught.

I could use the firewood mind you..
Power outages seem less of an ordeal here in the country, as compared to when I lived in the city. I think the fact that we mainly heat the house by wood is a big factor. With the wood stove you can still have hot water, stay cozy and cook a meal as well. Not so with a gas forced air furnace that I was used to.
One factor that is a bit of a problem, is that the well pump won't run when the power is down. Fortunately I have several rain barrels brimming with water, so for dish washing, and toilet flushing, we have it covered. Still a bit of a pain not to be simply turn on a tap like with city water.
I had planned on working on the Shelby Cobra replica I am building out in the shop, but it was pretty dim in there with no lights. Also, I couldn't use the drill, compressor, or other power tools. I spent the good part of the day reading, snoozing, and in general having a nice day off from the usual chores, other than packing wood from the woodshed. Kind of nice for a change.
How did others fair that storm?
