I've tried several brands over the last few years and have pretty much settled on Muzzy 100-grain 3-blades. They've given me consistently excellent results and I've taken several deer and a couple coyotes with them. Most often the shots have been complete pass throughs and, when sighting in, they strike exactly the same spot as field points.
I did try mechanicals one year (forget the brand) and didn't like them. In general, I don't trust them to open, although I'm sure there are some very good designs. |

Only a Blue Grouse so far as I am new to bow hunting. But I am getting good groups at the range so am very happy so far. When I did the research about picking these broadheads I found out that many experienced hunters were using them too with good results & pass throughs.

I have been using Slicktrick 4 blades. I haven't connected with them yet but they fly like darts, and I have heard nothing but good thing s about them.

I have tried Sonoran mechanicals 100 grn and wasn't entirely impressed with their performance on a deer and bear i shot (penetration was poor), I tried steel force 100's and they basically disintegrated when they contacted bone in a bear i shot. I tried Magnus stinger's 100grn but one of the side blades broke off in the broadhead butt so they went intio the garbage. Then I tried the Montec G5 100grn and I doubt that I will switch again, these things are made from 1 solid peice of steel so thety are tough as nails, they fly quite well and penetrate great. I shot a deer with them this fall at 52 yds and the arrow passed completely through and was found 20 yds past the point of impact, put it on the stone and she was ready to go again, good as new. I highly recccomned these heads!

I shot a black bear with Rocky Mtn. Snyper expandables and the arrow went right through the bear and 20 yds. passed it...the bear only went 20 yards before expiring. I have since switched to fixed blade Thunderhead 100's because twice I have spent all day looking for deer that my buddies have shot at with expandables....the biggest problem is that if they don't pass through they close up inside the animal and then just fall out without doing anymore cutting. This year I got a bear and a mule deer with the Thunderheads....both pass through shots right through bone too!
Moral of the story...stay away from expandables.

OH, almost forgot also tried the rocket ultimate steel 100 grns, they started to fall apart after a couple shots in the broadhead butt as well.

300 wsm I have been using the 100 grain rockets (steel head ) I have one that has killed 2 deer . I used a new on the moose I got in 2003 . I have also used the the other rockets with the 2" cutting dia they work well but I have had the blades break. I only used the thunder heads 100g for 1 kill .They
also worked well. The bottom line is. If you like the penetration and the flight of the arrow with any broad head .use them .I have started putting finger nail polish on the blade mounting screws to stop them from coming loose (rocket steel heads). we will have to go out for bear in the spring . But you have to leave the 300 at home LOL. have a great new year's see you soon |
