BCAA and the JOP

The B.C. Archery Association has some great programs for kids, aka their Junior Olympic Program. Just over a week ago, they ran concurrent indoor events in Penticton, Prince George, and Abbotsford with a total participation of 257 archers. This was the B.C. Championships and the format was an 18 m, 2 round shoot at targets of 40, 60, or 80 cm, depending on each archers current level.

Our small club in Grand Forks had one representative, who shoots with a recurve and - I must say - does it well. He won his division of 15 shooters. So we're all jumping up and down with delight for him.

Kudos to the BCAA for doing such a great job of sponsoring this type of activity.

Jack, I know you shoot a compound but if you instructed this lad in recurve then a "tip of the hat to you" as you done it well.

Thumbs up Recurve a dying trend?

Many, many, many moons ago I shot competitively. I went to the BC summer games twice thanks to the BCAA. I have no complaints about them. Just the advancement of the technology is what irks me.

I found over the years that I shot (from age 13 to 19) more and more people were going with compounds. If it wasn’t that, it was recurve with sights and stabilizers out the yin yang. I never got in to that race. I found my niche in the recurve bare-bow class and had a silver the first year and a bronze the next. I had a great time doing it too. Looking back there was fewer and fewer people to compete with as the years went by, mainly because everyone else had pulleys, stabilizers, and sights.

No doubt that organizations like BCAA are great for promoting the sport and giving the young ones a facet to get out and play.
