Sitkaspruce, when I am hunting I don't shoot more that 30 yards so I use 2 pins. 20 and 30. If the animal is closer than 20 then the arrow will strike a bit high but when taking into consideration the target size and being less than 20 yds the amout of inaccuracy should be minimal. I shot a buck at 12 yards using my 20 yd pin and I pinned both lungs.
Having said that, my current bow, a Browning Midas Hunter, is not as fast as yours but I have a Powertec enroute so I don't know if my strategy will change. It will definetly be a quicker bow. The bottom line is to go and fling some arrows at a target and see if you can make due with one pin. It sure would make things easier. I just seen a reply on HBC and for 3D I use 20 out to fifty yard pins. Last edited by walksalot; 04-18-2006 at 02:43 PM. |

sitkaspruce I have 5 pins in my sight 20 to 60 yards . I use the same bow for 3d as hunting . This dosesn't mean I would take a 60 yard shot . I shoot a hoyt tenacity at 295 feet per second it would not be as fast as some bows out there now but it works for me . I like the 5 pins in the sight do to the fact when I tried one pin I would forget to raise or lower the bow . Out to 30 yards I would get away with one pin but any farther would screw with my head . The more guessing I take out of the picture the better I do . ie range finders, camo, sents ,tree stands and mostly practice . And yes before the question is asked I have killed both deer & moose over 40 yards & 1 bear at 35 yards . I will only do that if every thing feels right for the shot . A bear I feel has the smallest kill zone and it will come back to kill you so a slight 1/4
away or a broadside shot is the best and a 35 yard shot was a stretch on a bear . Try with one pin , or a one pin movable sight ,and a multi pin sight . See which works for you the best good luck I hope I helped . calvin L |

I go 20-70. However only the top 3(20,30,40) are for hunting, the rest are 3-D, target. If I was setting up a dedicated hunting site it would go 20-30-40.

I run three,20,30,40,and 3 different colours, yellow green red.Anything past 40 will be BIG and standing broadside before I`ll shoot,Too many pins ARE confusing and will bite you in the ass one day on a shot of a lifetime,Keep it simple and less things can go wrong.

Sight Pins
Hey Bud
Well.. I use a Trophy Ridge Vertical Pin Sight using 5 Pins. 20-30-40-50-60 yards. It doesnt matter how flat your bow is to shoot with a single pin.. it is knowing your distance and how your bow shoots. I could shoot a slow bow with one pin at 60 yards but you gotta know how it shoots and how high or low to aim on an animal. Personaly, I think a single pin is a waste of time. If you sight your bow in you KNOW it is going to shoot your group consistantly. If you dont already I would consider a peep sight, but make sure it has a good peep hole to gather more light and allow your eye to focus. Also, try shooting with your not dominant eye fairly open with your shooting eye open. This allows you to see your pins and target much easier. Kisser buttons work great for anchoring in the same spot all the time. For a sight look at the following: PSE Top Gun Trophy Ridge Vertical Pin Tru-Glo ( any of the newer models are great pins ) Hoepfully this helps you out, feel free to message me anytime. |

20-30-40 a Sidewinder on a Martin Sabre, even in the dark you can see them glow, my old eyes love em.
As far as a single pin goes, take 5 pie plates with a 1" black or whatever colour spot in the middle space them unevenly apart from 20 to 40 yds/mtr's just walk out dont count paces then if you can put an arrow with a broadhead into the plate every time by centering the single pin on the spot regardless of which plate you shoot at no matter if you are shooting from the knees, sitting, and/or standing then you are good to go as far as a single pin is concened. Still use a rangefinder!!! don't do no good bein able to knock the nuts of a gnat at 40 yds with an arrow if you're unable to correctly judge how far it away is...
