Whoa, what a nice deer! Way to go, and - yes - where's the blow by blow description of the hunt?

Mike,

Man that is a hawg.....still waiting to score on my first deer with the bow....not for lack of trying. Passed on a few spikers in the past couple of years....maybe this year will be my year to score. Give us some details on the hunt.

Guy's
Thanks for the nice comments. Happy with the deer, no the biggest I have ever shot but very respectible.
Not much of a story - Have a bail blind that I use to hunt open country / feeder crops. Had been watching a field for 2 weeks prior to season and watched the buck I shot and another bigger buck come into the field. The deer were coming in around 7:50 to 8:05pm.
I got into the bail at 5:00pm and waited, had several does come in an wind me around 6:30pm, snort and bugger off. Had them at 30-35 yards. Saw the biggest of the bucks come in down wind pick me up and head back to the trees that sit behing the feeder crop. The bucks were using a different route than I had seen the last few days. The long and short is the buck I took above came up a fence line quickly jumped the fence and moved side ways to my bail at 55 yards. I had range found the area when i got into the bail. I shot the deer and he dropped his head and rolled over a small hill (thought he was going to go down within 20 yards of the hit) and could not longer see him.
Got out of the bail 45 mintues later so that I did not spook the deer in the field and to give the one I shot some time.
As you can imagine I was happy to find the deer I arrowed!
Thanks -again - Mike

You made a 55 yrd shot!? & successfully........Did you get a pass through at that range. How many # bow are you using?

I was thinking of limiting myself to 40yrd with my 70# set at 65ish.

88 dodge, I won't answer for Mike but I can tell you that the early season mulie I shot was 52 yds. I found the arrow 20 yds beyond the point of impact. I shoot 72#'s, 415grn arrow with a 100grn Montec G5 broadhead at 297 ft/sec.

Again, congrats to mike on a great deer!

Chris

It's amazing what an arrow will pass through. We watched a guy shoot a medium sized bull moose at a lazered 71 yds while it stood near a road. Complete pass through, in the ribs and out through the opposite shoulder cutting a rib on the way in. I wouldn't take a shot that far but some guys do. I limit myself to 50yds or so.

Hey! Is that a kicker on the lelf antler? 5x4?

When I bought my bow a few years back, Dale, the salesmen said how far out of the bank do you want to pull your arrow. It's amazing how much energy is stored in a bow. Dave
