Recurve bows
Hello you stick and stringers,
I have an oppurtunity to purchase 1 or 2 recurves with 60lb draw weight each. my question is what type of arrows would you use with a recurve for hunting. I target shot for many years using a recurve with aluminum, I bow hunted with a compound with aluminum. Was curious what you recurve users favored? wood, aluminum, or the graphite shafts? Would be using this on moose and deer if I decide to get back into it. Thanks W.

hi there luckynuts:
i'm glad to see a fellow recurve bow user. I've been shooting a 50# bear 52" kodiak magnum recurve bow for the past three years. i love it!!!! i've used both aluminum and cedar shafts for my arrows. I find I enjoy the wooden arrows a bit better. I found they shoot a little straighter than my aluminums. Maybe the wood has a little more give than the aluminums, and the aluminums are a bit more finnicky. I have been assembling my own arrows for the past two years and it sure is time consuming.....the sanding, painting & varnishing. But I am much more satisfied with my own work. My friends are always impressed with homemade arrows over the commercial stuff...it's not difficult at all. Besides.....shoot traditional, stay more traditional.....that's my humble opinion. I hope to actually hunt with it this year......i've been kicking myself for not using a bow the last two years....i've bagged two wt bucks and a wt doe, all within 7 to 12 yards for the past two years. these were well within range of a traditional recurve bow....still hunting/stalking. good shooting!!!

Hey Thwack,
Thanks for the advice. Don't know if I would find the time to make up my own arrows or have the patience Looking at pricing, man have they come up since I last bought! I used to shoot gamegetters xx75 I believe, with 125 thunder heads and 100 titans. Hopefully the bows will turn out to be worthwhile as I'm starting to look forward to shooting again. would love to stick a moose with one I will be stopping in at Corolanes on the way back from the gunshow this weekend to brush up on info and new gear etc.PS love the handle, it is a satisfying sound when you connect. W.

hello again luckynuts:
i also used to shoot the gamegetter xx75...like i said before they are a bit finnicky. a couple of friends of mine have been bagging moose for the past 3 years with a 65# traditional long bow between ranges of 15 to 30 yards....they had a a complete pass thru on 1 bull and the other two cows, the arrow stuck about 3/4 way in resulting a 100-200 yard blood trail. last year i lured a huge 5x5 elk in from 200 yards to 40 yards!!!! that was the scare of my life.....let me tell you, don't ever raise your recurve over your head inverted!!!! that damn bullk charged at me and i did not have a tag so i couldn't shoot him.....but i just about had to change my shorts he came to a skidding halt on its rear haunches, lept up about 6 feet, turned 180 degrees and ran like he saw a double donged goat!!!! I can't blame him, he was guarding him harem of cows!!!! boy were they also beautiful i hope you bag a moose, i sure would, but those dang draws take forever in alberta!!!!

Doubled dong donkeys
That is funny. i had a scare last year with a non legal big bull moose, he stopped short of 12 feet and yeah I got the shakes...As for sticking a moose i have to focus on getting a bow first and then there's all that practise, though it should come back pretty easy. Probablly wouldn't happen this year but you never know. as for getting moose there's plenty up here just have to ask it to wait while you count it's points to see if he's legal W

Carbons
I don't want to take anything away from real traditional (as in wood)...but carbon arrows are the easiest to care for. If they are not broke they are straight (get it....they don't bend). Thay are completely maintenance free and they are cheaper than alums now. For a 60 lb bow you might get away with a 500 spine....probably a 400 spine. On the other side......they are light.....too light for recurves and longbows without adding additional weight. I don't like using weight tubes or the like.......I prefer using heavy field points and/or broadheads and/or inserts. 175 gr heads or heavier......you can get 100 gr brass inserts as well...instead of the standard 25 gr alum inserts. 3Rivers Archery is an excellent supplier for stuff that you can't find locally. http://www.3riversarchery.com/Cat.asp?c=2&s=0&p=0. I have to admit I don't shoot a recurve........shoot a longbow.

Carbons
I'm shooting 400 grain 55-70 gold tips out of my long bow there super fast but they cause a lot of noise out of the bow I asked around before i shot them and a few old bowyers said my bow would be ok shooting them.
