First, welcome aboard, and welcome to a great(if slightly addicting sport). For tips, I would point you towards, an archery club first, and a pro shop. These guys will be able to help you set up draw length, draw weight, bow type, etc. It can be somewhat difficult doing it yourself the first time. I would suggest an archery club first, as I find they are less likely to pressure you into a sale, you can look, see what everybody else has, maybe test fire a bow, then armed with a bit of knowledge, head to the pro shop, check out 2, 3, 4, as many as you can, and go from there.
Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free.

I too 2nd Kirby welcome . You should first & formost go to a club . There will be some one that will let you try there bow out . Don't get caught up in the speed game right away . Get a bow that fits you with a good brace hieght . There is always a good used bow out there to start with (same some cash for arrows) . You will have a ton of fun and be ticked off also with the good old BRAIN FART'S. Good luck have fun and do not be shy to ask if you do not know. The only dumb question is the one not asked.

I would go with a carbon arrow (I like gold tips they just plain work) fiber optic sight , sims vibration dampener, and a release . if you are going to use a bow qwiver get one that sits as close to the bow as possable (help's to stop bow can'ting . I use a old potato sack stuff with plastic as a target bag it is cheeper than the target butts
have a great time

could i use a potato sack filled with sand as a target? or would that wreck the arrows? how well does the plastic stop the arrows?

Rookiehunter dont use sand!!!!
plastic bags catch the arrow better. To see true arrow flite it is important to shoot into a foam target though.you can learn alot from seeing how you arrow impacts the target.and tune your bow from there. also its easier to tell if you are contacting the rest with a vane. the Matthews FX was notorious for having arrow contact on the riser so be aware of that, also it has a short brace height so it is less forgiving. as a first bow it might not be the greatest choice.
Like everyone else said though, go to the clubs and see what each person shoots also ask each person why they shoot it.remember everyone thinks their bow is the best!,I have shot 4 brand new bows this year and they all shoot great.

DEFINATLY DO NOT USE SAND! If you head out to places like Coopers food, Safeway, etc they always have alot of plastic that they use to wrap around pallets of food when its shipped ask for it, one trip, and you've got plasic for a year.
