I haven't missed an opening day of archery season in a long time but this might be a first.
Being an orchardist the fruit is ripening rather quickly but I an still cautiously optomistic I will be out there on Sept.1. Truth be known I enjoy the couple of days before the season watching the fields to see what quality of animal is in the vacinity, then going after them in November, I love hunting the rut. |

Hey KevinD, I was up in that area a couple years ago for early season elk and deer. We had two encounters with Grizz but fortunately neither ended up bad as we didn't have a defender with us. Saw lots whitetails, mulies and elk and managed to stalk a couple of bulls but just couldn't close the gap below 70-80 yards before they busted me both times (once a spiker and the other was a sixer). Good luck guys....I'll be mulie/sheep hunting up the Ashnola near Keremeos for the first week.
Hey walksalot, do you have any of those problem bears or deer in your orchard that you might want a guy to take care of for you with bow or rifle? I have a buddy who is a new hunter and is yet to bag an animal....I'm keeping my ears open for an opportunity for him. Anyhoo, just thought I'd ask or if you know any other orchardists who have problems. BCBairdo

We got a deer fence up and it keeps the deer out when the gates are closed but it doesn't keep the bears out as they tunnel under the fence. The bears just eat the fruit off the ground and so far they have not caused any trouble, it just makes it harder to go for evening strolls in the orchard. We have a sow and three cubs that just moved into the area. The one cub is a runt but by the time they finish eating the fruit off the ground it will have a fighting chance to survive ther winter.
A couple of years ago we had a sow and three cubs spend time with us and it is amazing the amount of weight those little buggers can put on eating fruit. If I hear of any orchardists who have problems I will, if the orchardist wants me to, pm a name and number. Last edited by walksalot; 08-22-2004 at 09:19 PM. |

Well I went out this morning and seen a few bucks but nothing I wanted and nothing I was close enough to shoot anyway.
I came home and headed down the orchard with the dogs and they spied the bears having an early supper in the orchard. The dogs started chasing the bears and the cubs were running toward me with the sow huffing behind. Discression (sp) being the better part of valour I ran like a bastard toward the house with the bawling cubs, angry sow and the dogs herding them in my direction. I have a bum knee but it sure never failed my today, if the olympics weren't over I might just try out. After things quieted down I checked on them and all were having a snooze, I suspect tuckered out from the little episode. |
