I have wondered about those self climbers.....How are they practical here in BC where alot of the trees have branches. I guess you have to cut while you climb.

I use a light wooden ladder & haul in this heavy duty steel sit down / folding stand.

It truly is a pain to use the system I am using.

Currently working on disigning a lighter system.

The best system I have seen so far is my buddies. He has an all aluminum system /w climbing sticks. For the life of me I can't find the exact model anywhere.....must be discontinued.

There are similar ones but pricey of course.

You have to consider whether you are packing it far into the bush or not or whether you have an ATV to carry it.

This will determine your capacity re: weight of the stand.

I would recommend a safety harness even though I don't use one.

As in another post I replied to -

I have an all aluminum stand that weighs all of 12 pounds. Very comfortable and can sit all day in it. Made by API Outdoors, Baby Grande Lite

I've carried it for km's into places without any trouble on my back or like I am carrying a school bag on my shoulder with a sling.

Climbers are excellent if you live and hunt exclusivly in hardwood forests where branches are not a concern. I feel in BC, a treestand with screw steps works best or those ladder sticks for hunting for its versatality. Climbers tend to be more heavy and bulkier as well.

I can be up 20 feet and ready to sit in 10 minutes with screw steps !!! I have an anchor screw so when I haul up my stand with a thin rope (cause its lite) I put the stand on the anchor ... and I am hands free for doing the safety strap around the tree .... takes seconds to secure and has a safety pin.

I am very happy with it and have used it for moose, elk and deer ... all over up here in Northern BC and in Saskatchewan.

Several of the guys at the archery club swear by the Warren and Sweat brand of tree stands....most comfortable, best overall design. Don't know if the company still exist....maybe it changed hands but if I were going to buy a self climber that's where I would be putting my money.
