210 gr or 225 gr triple shocks?
I am looking into loading some of these for my 338-06. Has any one had any experince with them? I can see the 225 grain have an advantage over the 210gr. What do you think?
Thanks

Id go with the 210 gr TSX, I bet it would out penetrate a 250 grain Nosler. Quality bullets are never a waste of $ IMO

A 250 Nosler will penetrate a moose end to end as will most 250 grain cup & core bullets designed for 338 WM velocities. The TSX will do it too and may end up a few more feet downrange of the dead moose but the wound channel will be smaller. A FMJ bullet will out-penetrate both but most shooters realize it is not a good choice for hunting in western Canada. As mentioned I like the X bullets for the smaller bore rifles when they are asked to do work near the upper limits of their abilities. If someone was looking to load their 25-06 for moose hunting the TSX would be the first bullet I recommended. For the upper end mid-bores and the large bores however they simply are not needed.

may not be needed, but they sure do work good, and dont tend to damage meat as much as a lead core bullet

I agree that these bullets are not needed in this gun, but I like to play with different bullets. At the moment all I have is 225gr hornady interbonds and 250gr hornady sp. But loading will have to wait till spring as I start a 5 month coarse on monday

I've had good results with the 210gr. Partition in 338WM. Never recovered one, should work well in the 338-06. More damaged meat though than the 225gr. Interlock, but they do penetrate more.

The 225 Hornady goes length wise as well in this caliber. The 210 Nosler is bit softer than either the 225 or the 250,as such is great bullet for the 338.06. I use the 225 Hornady with a caseful of Ramshot Big Game. 'Boo likes N-550,it works ,just not as well for me. Also a caseful.

Ramshot powders
After trying a fair number of powders in my 338-06 and 264WM,they worked the best.I picked them up at the Kamloops gun show off Raynershiner. Even finding someone on the net with experance burning them was hard.Since I use a Lee powder measure ,I don't have to worry about how powders measure. So they being ball powders only made them more messy.
For my 338-06 and 225 I needed a powder that was two grains faster than 4350 class and four grains slower than the 4064 class,Big Game fits into that slot and is more flexable than N-550. I found N-550 to have narrow pressure sweet spot. It very sweet in that range, however. I got more velocity and better groups with the bit slower Big Game. 22' barrel 2630f/s 225 Hornady 3/4" The overbore 264 burns Kingsford slow powders. Even Magnum isn't in that class, it was the one that worked best for me and it almost filled the case. With a 24" barrel I got 3150 and 1/2" groups .It doesn't get better than that. A 264 was designed around the 140 bullet. |
