was looking at ballistic charts for the 270 with 150 gr . and noticed that the energy at 400 yrds is only 870 or so . i'm thinking thats to low for effective power on moose or deer . any oppinions appreaciated

My manual (sierra) says it is between 1400-1500 ft.lbs. of energy @ 400 yrds. That being based on a close to book maximum load. 150 grn. bullet starting out @ 2800-2900 fps. More than enough for deer, moose at that distance.
Note, the manual says there is still over a 1000 ft. lbs. @ 600 yrds. given the above mentioned velocities.

Here is an online data center there are a few more by the various manufactures.

I like the sierra CD style manual it has easy to follow charts and automatic calculation tables for all bullets. Speer also makes a good manual.
