338 Federal
I am thinking of purchasing a new "ultra light" rifle such as the Kimber Montana. As for chambering, I am intriuged with the new 338 Federal. Anyone have experience or opinions on this round??

It should be a winner but probably will have a tough time getting out of the starting gate.
A moderate ranges it has the ability to do anything the 308 can do and more. It also provides the option to throw heavy weight bullets above the capability of the .308 at large & nasty critters that may want to eat you.  It will have a bit more range than it's close cousin the .358 as well as the ability to push bullets with a slightly higher sectional density. The downside? It ain't "sexy" and doesn't carry the word "magnum as part of it's name. It also really doesn't do anything the .358 Winchester can't do. At the end of the day I think too many speed junkies will yawn loudly and move on to the next super-mag barrel eater and continue to shoot animals at bow ranges where they would be better served with the 338-08 aka "338 Federal"

I would buy a 358 however I don't handload and I think that winchester sabatoged this round by not offering enough variety in bullet choice.
My brother is buying a 338 federal and it looks as if federal is doing the right thing and offering it in a good choice of bullets. It's amazing how well designed rounds like the 358 can be overlooked because they just work with out all the flash
