You may want to consider the Speer 400gr FN. For a jacketed bullet, that's the one I've had the best success with accuracy wise in my .45-70 Marlin 1895 GS. I haven't shot game with it yet but I have tried shooting it into a few different mediums and it seems to expand well and hold together pretty good.
A short while ago I started trying out a few cast bullet and there's some fun loads there as well. I plan to do a little more serious testing with them in the not too distant future. |

4895 ,RL7 & H4198.
I see mixed opinions on the powders avail for 45-70 gov. reloads. I think the better question for powders is .. what would be the pro's / cons and ideal powder types for 45-70 reloading.. also what is the difference margin on these powders. can someone go completely wrong from one powder to the next. I for one own a speer handbook and there is probably 10 dif powders to choose from and with the time it takes for me to order in different powders including the prices spent on trying poor powder's ect, it would be nice to get a recommendation on where a persons best start would be. We use forums like this to combine our experiences to minimize wasted time on poor performing products and maximize our time shooting /Improving, so I'd love to see some pros and cons and real experience differences between the powders and comparisons. I do understand each gun shoots differently but I'd like to think there is some kind of medium out there that people can agree is a good starting stone to choose from. Thanks. PS :: That being said the H 4198 is the most common recommended that I have found. Last edited by leonard; 02-26-2007 at 10:20 PM. |

These forums are great and I have decided to try IMR4198, IMR3031, & RL-7 with a Hornady 350gr FN bullet. I hope to get to the range this upcoming Sunday to try the loads out. I am confident some of these will work just fine.

When I loaded for my GG with 350gr Hornadys & Bullet Barn 350gr Hardcast, Re7 was my go-to powder. For my "trapdoor" low recoil, practice loads, I found IMR3031 worked well for low deviations, however, I did notice that the 3031 was kinda dirty and there was always some unburned powder.

I think there must be some big-bore disease going around ...................
![]() I was going through the Buy & Sell at CGN this morning and before I knew what I was doing I had sent a PM with the simple message: "I will take it!" (Sell one, buy 2 seems to be the way I have been "reducing" the herd lately. ) Tommorow I must place an order for some 400 Speers and 350 Hornadys............. as well as some dies, a .45 pilot & #4 collet for the RCBS trimmer, a shell holder, a bag of brass ............... It IS a disease I tell you ............................

Gary, Did you buy Norman's 1895SS? I was very tempted as this Guide Gun is heading to Hixon next week. Buy the way, I found an awesome load with RL-7 and the 350gr Hornady's. I have a picture of the target, but I can't seem to get the pictures to post (operator error I suppose ). Send me a pm if you want the details.Cheers! James

I have been looking for a good "truck-gun" for when we are cutting firewood. The last couple of years we have been having more than a few bear encounters and my wife is starting to get quite spooked. As I don't own any other rifles suitable for shooting a bear it was a good excuse to buy a big bore. (that and Norman's asking price was too good to pass up. )

Oh no, not that!!! It is staying in the family at least - Dad will be doing some guiding this year (for fun) and the stainless Guide Gun is just the ticket for him. I hope he can handle those 350gr loads...if not, it will have to come back home.
