577 Snider
A friend of mine just showed me an old 1892 Enfield in 577 Snider that has been passed down in the family. He has some brass, a set of dies and a bullet mould although I don't recall what weight. I have a copy of Cartridges Of The World that has some spec's and reload info. I was wondering, does anyone out there have any additional reload info or loading experience I can pass on to him?

Go to the British Military Forums: (http://p223.ezboard.com/bbritishmilitariaforums). There will be enough resources there to keep you happy for a long time!
The date 1892, Enfield and Snider don't quite right to me, although I could well be wrong. Might you have a Martini in 577/450? The Martini action has a breechblock that is hinged at the back and tilts down for loading. By 1892 the .577 Snider round had been superceded by the 577/450. But I'm no expert- the folks on the BM forums can set you right. Don't forget to post some pics, too, which will help immeasurably. (Overall rifle, breech area and any markings.) Good luck. Whatever it is, it sounds like a fine rifle and will certainly turn heads at the range! Stuart

Snider info
http://www.milsurps.com/
I am not familiar with the website that josquin referred you to, but I do know this one and can highly recommend it. It is a Canadian site, and I know a lot of the folks who are posting on it. They know their stuff, and are VERY helpful. If you are also on Gun Nutz, please pm me and I will send you the name of a fellow who loads for .577 Snider and does a heck of a good job. I know, as he loaded some up for me! That was a personal favour, he does not do this for anybody kind of thing, but he has a peepot full of load recipes and advice.Doug |
