7mm-08 Ackley Improved!

What can a person expect out of a 7mm-08 Ackley improved performance wise? What do you have to do to form brass? Are there any better brand of cases than another for forming? I was thinking of purchasing a new Remington CDL in 7mm-08 rem and getting it rechambered to improved? Is there any advantage to this? I have a custom made short action rem 700 thumbhole stock that I want to put on this package. Was just wondering about the improved 7mm-08. Thanks for any input.

Look at the shoulder angle on the 308 case, you won't gain that much AI ing it. What about reaming it out to .284,now then you would gain something.Open up the bolt stop and you have almost a 3.1" COL.

7-08 AI gains about 100 fps over the regular version. 140 gr @ 3000 fps

% velocity gain is equal to 1/4 the % capacity gain, pressures being equal. There are cartridges that where the gain in capacity is large, such as the 300Wea over the 300H&H,but with a modern cartridge design like the 308,the capacity gains are not worth the bother. I do recommend AI ing the 338-06,not for any velocity gain but the two grain increase is enough to use 4350.Same velocity but at a lower pressure.

4350 seems to work good in a regular 338-06 though...

another advantage above velocity increase, when Ackley Improving, is longer case life and less stretching

The 338-06 and the 225 Hornady in standard 3.340 box of my FN compresses even W760 before it even comes close to 2600.I tried,it went even slower when it was compressed. The long magnum boxs of the M-70 post 64 and the M-700 are better match.

3000 fps from a 22" is barrel is what you can expect w/140gr bullets (3200fps w/120's).

My favorite is Winchester brass... as for forming simply load and shoot (factory ammo works fine too).

Advantages? Almost 280 Rem performance, no case trimming, in a slick feeding good looking short action cartridge.

I've used mine to take Stone's sheep, goat, whitetail, moose, elk, grizz, and blackies... it is a great cartridge.

I am gathering the pieces to build a 7mm-08. I toyed with the idea of going AI, but like others have said it is not worht the hassle for MAYBE 100 fps. I read that Hornaday light magnum has an advertised velocity of 3000 fps with their 140 grain bullet, an SST I believe. I will be using Lapua brass as well.
