Just picked up a tumbler and some walnut media, just wondering if the dust accumulation on the inside of the brass is going to be detrimental or not? I have been loading for a while but never tumbled brass until now, any pointers or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I never really worried about the dust in my cases. Just filter the cases in a plastic colander to shake out the walnut pieces and give them a light tap on the case mouth is all I have ever done. My loads even when chronographed had only 12 fps variance....but I am very anal about my prep work and trickle up each load to weight.
Make sure you visually inspect each primer flash hole though...walnut is just the right size to plug the hole without seeing it. I just pass a decapping rod into each hole to ensure no hangups. If you need to reduce the amount of dust in the media just add a couple of tablespoonfuls of a good silver polish and it seems to help out. Have fun Paul |

I did use the coarser medias for a while, corn cob and walnut hulls, and I did find them dusty to work with and yes those little bits got stuck in the primer holes more often than not. I used to emply a straightened-out paperclip to clear the flash-holes. The polishing compound sold by one of the companies, Lyman I think but I do not recall, was highly aromatic and toxic, as I found out when I was running my tumbler in my basement. (I did not have a garage.) I was very nearly overcome by the fumes, opened all the windows and took the tumber outside, etc etc. nasty stuff.
A buddy of mine here introduced me to a very fine product, which I believe is nut shells of some kind (I must ask him again), but about the consistency of sand. Put that in the tumbler, add a tablespoon of Turtle Wax and a tablespoon of mineral spirits, and turn the tumbler on for a bit to let the ingredients mix. The polishing media is now good for thousands of cases, which come out of the media bright and shiny and CLEAN, you don't have to wipe them off at all. Doug |

Polisher advice
If you want cheap media contact a sandblasting outfit and buy a 50lb bag of crushed walnut shells ( about $30 ). You are set for a long time if not for life. Just add acouple of table spoons of Nufinish car polish to the tumbler and you are good to go. Beats the hell out of paying $30 plus for 8lbs from a sport shop.

No. None stuck yet. I cut/rip the pieces into 2" to 3" squares and put around 1/2 dozen pieces in the bowl. One dryer sheet, I think. Give it a try - I know you'll like it. James
