Sniper58 and I went on a hunt last fall where he was using his .243 loaded with the Fusion bullet. When a buck presented himself broadside at just under 100 yards Clint put the Fusion bullet through the deer's lungs.

I was a little worried that this copper plated bullet - especially one as small as the 243 - would not hold up to a short range hit. I shouldn't of worried as the bullet worked wonderfully and the deer died within 75 yards. (The only problem was he was only 60 yards from the cliff edge when shot. )

Upon cleaning the deer it was obvious the bullet had worked well and left a good wound track and a good sized exit hole. While it is impossible to rate a bullets performance on a single shot I have to say this bullet worked a lot better than I thought it would.

thanks cariboo, looked up fusion bullets on the net and they advertise them as a deer bullet. wondering if they would still perform well on the muscle/bone mass of large big game? or would that make a differance. thanks again

Here's a photo of the Fusion bullet that was recovered from my brother's deer this fall.

.270 Win, 150 gr. Shot at around 250 yds.
Recovered under the hide on the far side of the deer. I'm not sure how much the deer weighed, but it was a big Saskatchewan Mulie (4x4 with a nice little "sticker" on the left side)
Looking at the recovered bullet, I'd say that it was pretty good performance.

I used the fusion in .300 winmag on my moose this year, and both bullets were complete pass through(@40-50yds) with good wound channels.

Like Mark said..damn good bullets from all reports.
I grabbed a couple boxes for my 7mm remmag to try but have not shot a critter with them yet. I have had great luck with federal products over the years I expect no less with the fusion.

30/06 Fusion

I tried them this year on my deer. They shoot WAY too accurate for factory ammo out of my Tikka T3, to the tune of .50MOA 3 shot group at 100m, 1.2 MOA 3 shot group at 200m. I took my 3 point Blacktail this year at 235m with one shot, found in the off side under the hide. Mushroomed just as in the other picture in the thread. The deer took 10 steps and dropped. It went through a rib, the heart and a lung. I am happy to say the least. And it is affordable too!

I wish Federal would make this bullet available as a component for use hand-loaders. I think it would be fun to work with.

The 1st time I tried this type of bullet was in my .44 mag Ruger Sil. pistol 250 gr if my memory serves. They were extremely accurate and downrange performance was tops. I believe Speer was selling them at the time. Somehow they electro bond the copper uniformly to the lead core..no cup and draw. Saw 2 articles one by C. Boddington and he seemed pretty impressed with them. Convinced me to try them I got 2 boxes hopefully next year I'll be able to see 1st hand results.

i butchered 3 deer this fall that were shot with fusion bullets,, all exited, and the steaks looked great. i will also add that i butchered 2 deer shot with barnes bullets, not impressed, both deer travelled over 200 yrds. both deer shot lungs and one shot in rear ham. same size exit as entry. the ham shot deer no tissue damage, no blood clotting, i even doubted it was shot there untill i found entry hair in the meat. i know dead is dead, but i see more instant deaths with a leaded bullet, ..

I took my Saskatchewan whitetail with a 165 grain Fusion at a little over 100 yards. Had a nice pass through and no meat damage at all. It was a clean heart shot and the exit hole appeared to be a bit larger diameter than the entry. All in all it performed pretty well...he went about 15' then hit the ground for good.

Yeah I found a bit more info on the Fusions. I believe its a colaboration between Federal and a outfit called ATK.. (ATK) invented the process for the type of bullet manuf. the Fusion has so they make the bullet and Federal loads em for us.
Speer sold some under their brand as component bullets mainly for handgun silhouette bullets which I tried and found to be great in my .44 mag but that was about 10 yrs ago. Heres a list of ATK's Commercial side..pretty impressive. They are also a huge Military contractor in the USA.

Major Products and Programs — ATK Commercial

* Alliant Powder for reloaders and ammunition manufacturers
* CCI, Speer, Lawman, and Blazer ammunition; Speer bullets for reloaders
* Champion traps and paper, metal and clay targets
* Federal Premium, Fusion, and Estate Cartridge ammunition
* Gunslick and Outers gun care products
* Shooters Ridge rests, gear bags and speed loaders
* Ram-Line replacement stocks
* RCBS reloading equipment
* Weaver mounting systems
