Question flaring the case on .45/70

Hey master loaders.
I'm going to be starting to load for my new rifle, and have never loaded for a non-bottleneck cartridge.
My die set came with a case flare die, and I'm not sure if I need to flare the cases when loading jacketed bullets. If I should be using the flare die, how much of a flare do you guys put on the case? Just enough to start the bullet safely, I'm guessing, but I'm not sure.
At the price of brass these days, I'd rather screw up as few cases as possible.

Thanks in advance

Yes you will have to flare the case mouth. Set the flare die so that the bullet's base will just barely enter the case and you should be good to go.

I refused to "cheap out" on the scope for this rifle. Should have lots of eye relief. I won't have to explain a broken nose or eyebrow cut to anyone. (or wear sunglasses to cover it up)

Thanks for the help Gary, should have asked when i had you on the phone the other evening.

I couldn't wear the sunglasses as my nose was too bloody swollen!

I can actually touch it today without going through the roof and the mark on my forehead is starting to fade .................

No pictures ...........................

Stout load?? Yep!! 350 grain jacketed bullet @ 2100 fps.

The deer was about 100 feet below me on a bench. He was facing full away and the only shot I had was the back of the head and upper neck. As I hunched over I must have crept up on the stock and the rest is history. To make matters worse I placed the bullet between his antlers and he made it through the ordeal with less harm and blood on the ground than I did.
