target bullets will give ice pick wounds because they are basicly FMJ type bullets . in the right shot they kill anything aswell. but they dont expand so make the shot count.

I have used 85 grain ballistic tips with some success, if you hit them broadside or straight on from the front. If you rake them on an angle look out for a fist sized hole. I have also used 117 hornady's , they usually fully penetrate but do not expand much leaving only a quarter size hole on exit. For best results just shoot em in the head

Would those be legal to hunt with?
I seem to remember something about the legalities of hunting with solids(FMJ's)
I have had pretty good luck using Match Grade Bullets that have been slowed right down. They don't expand, and hydraulic shock is kept to a minimum.
In my experience, even small bullets that are moving at high velocities will cut coyote or lynx sized animals right in half.
I hit a lynx a couple yrs ago with a 55 gr Hornady SPBT moving at 4,200 fps, and ended up packing the lynx out of the bush in 2 pieces

your right rockdoctor.it says in the regs that .it is unlawful to use full metal jacketed bullets for hunting or trapping game..im gonna go with probably 117 or 120 grain soft points..others have said that they do less pelt damage.than the lighter bullets.

I'd get a clarification as to what FMJ stands for and what bullets fit this desc. I think the intent was so that military ammo wasn't used for hunting.
The diif. between a hollow-point and a match 70 gr. in .243 is only the hole size upfront. Just because no exposed lead shows, doesn't mean its a fmj.

Question

Out of idle curiosity, what CARTRIDGE are you shooting? There is quite a bit of difference between a .25 Rem and a .257 Wby, but both are quarter-bores...

So the answer might be to slow the loads down a bit (or not....)
