i was wondering if anybody knows if its safe to shoot steel shot out of my old semi auto winchester model 50 12 ga

On most of these old guns if you open the choke out to modified (about $40 to $50) you can shoot steel to your heart's content.

I do with a '57 Remington and a '64 Browning.
