One of my buddies has his rifle powder coated I think it looks pretty good. Pros, you can pick whatever color you want, I think it will last pretty well. The only thing that wasn't awesome was that you can't read the serial # very good anymore. Oh yeah he got his rings and bases done as well, not a good idea, on his third shot with the rifle (it was brand new) the screws stripped out of the rings and the scope slid back. He had to get the rings redone, I personally wouldn't get them done in the first place. Overall I think powdercoating is a good idea.

Definately a more "corrosion resistant" finnish then Blued steel.
Personnally for what Powder coating costs it makes the slight increase of a Stainless rifle vs blued steel one seem cheap

good call on the just buy a stainless steel rifle first. I never thought of it that way. I think the powdercoating cost a little over $200.

If you're looking for corrosion resistance...go stainless.

Powder coating does nothing for the most important parts of your firearm...bolt, inside barrel etc. These still need to be lubed and cleaned daily anyway. In reality, powder coating will only save 1/2 a minute of lubing the outside of your barrel.

If you feel a matte camo pattern could give you some "advantage" (ie. reduced glare), that's a different issue.

Consider nickeling. A matte nickel finish is durable, corrosion free and tough as hell. It won't ever flake off. It's so thin you can see the serial numbers through it. I got the bolt and action done as well and it's really slick. The action works super smooth.

Since Powder coat is thick, I would be worried about fit back into the stock as well as the heat from the cooking process. If you want to try it out let me know, I have a powder coater that owes me a few favors and will do it himself instead of some $10/hr monkey.
A few color choices for ya

The Fluorescent and Candy doesn't show up in the scan very well, but they are special effect powders and pretty neat.

Hey Butcher, I was wondering what type of pre-treatment you had to do for the action? I assume it was blued to start and needed etching or walnut blast?

K, just got off the phone with my powder coater, gonna do a project or two for shitz n giggles. Going in on Tuesday to look at what he has in the candy steel finishes. I will take apart a lever .22 and have him thin coat it then refinish the stock and forearm with a matching color, this should make it the ugliest .22 anyone has ever seen. Pics to follow as this progresses.

Powder coats

I have a buddy that did up an old 30-06 last year, put new barrel on, got it fluted and powder coated matte black. Same with the receiver...his is very happy with it. I personally had my Sako m75 SS 300WM fluted and just had the flutes teflon coated and the rest of the barrel is polished. Got this done in 1997-never a problem with it.

All work has done by Corlanes in Dawson Creek,BC. They do awesome work.
Seen a few other rifles done up in olive green/brown-desert looking with same colored stock.

What's the difference between "parkerized" and powder coated? Anybody know?

My Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag is parkerized, and it almost seems like what I expect a powder coat to look like. Certainly is a tough finish, dosent scratch at all. It does seem to hold the dirt though after a day in the goose pit. It take a bit of scrubbing to get the dirt out of the rougher finish. I wonder if a powder coated finish would have this same problem....
