Question Rem 700 barrel fluting

I posted this as a reply in another thread, but maybe it belongs over here, after all it is more of a technical issue. Changed it a bit, to clarify:

That 100th Anniversary 30-06 by Remington is one beautiful rifle, IMO. I was about to buy one last week, almost did it, until I looked down the flutes. I expected them to be straight, but the visible ones (not partially hidden under the stock, on the bottom side) sort of wandered irregularly off clockwise a bit, gave me the impression of a twisted barrel, which of course it wouldn't be, but the wallet went back into the pocket anyway. Just wondering if I was looking at a defective barrel, or if this is the way they were all machined, for some reason or other. I realize it probably wouldn’t affect performance, but it does detract from the appeal, for me anyway. Too bad, I don't imagine there are all that many of those left. Just wondering if any one could shed some light on this. Thanks, Bill.

Fluting IMO is something that should be done to a rifle barrel individually.Factories can't do that economially so the fluting is mass produced.I can't say it would effect a barrel as far as shooting goes, but if it is obviously not straight it definately takes away from the looks.Especially on a rifle such as a 100yr anniversary model that may be collected and not even shot.RB

Thanks for the comments. Ruttinbuck, a good explanation of what could cause the irregularities. Hard to fathom, though, with the precision of today's computerized precision machinery, but definitely detracts from the appearance, and the feeling about that particular rifle.

Rem 260, I guess you are lucky....and have one heck of a nice rifle as well……

Is that a "campfire special" AKA leupold 6X42 VX2 with an elevation knob?
If it is,What load are you running? Are the click adjustments accurate at longer ranges?RB

RB, it's a FXIII 6x42 with an elevation turret. havent gotten a chance to test this scope much, although it seems to track well. a very awesome scope

right now Im loaded up with 165 gr Nosler Accubonds over 57.0 grs Hodgdon 4350, F210M match primer & Lapua brass

it will be even more campfire-like next spring when I have a McMillan mtn rifle fiberglass swirly on it

I am running the same load {WLR primers & brass} in my 24" barrelled M700.
2825 FPS chronied.Great accuracy with both 165gr & 180gr AB and H4350 in that barrel,and only .5gr apart for powder weight.RB
