starting new loads
Im looking for a new method of developing my load for my 243.
I have Varget H4350 & IMR4064 for powder choices. Ive switched bullets to a 95G nosler BT. And now im going to start working up loads again because my old load no longer works for this bullet. As such im trying to stay away from the 24 round work ups from Min to max load with 0.5 grain increases of 3shot loadings. Because with such powder choices thats about 24 rounds of H4350 - 15 rounds of Varget and 24 rounds of 4064. This is acording to the .243 min max of Hodgdon Reloading Center info. So my question is directed at these things and I'd apreciate the knowledge you pro's can provide on this. 1.first where should I start this off the lands I have my OAL to the lands already how far is probly my best starting point off the lands. 2.Out of the 3 powders which would you use first to develope the 243 loads? 3.should i do the 24 shot .5 increment loads or what then move to .1? From what Ive seen .1 can even make a difference so basicly Ive had what I could call LUCK in the past and landed on a decent load with the other bullet Ive used(no longer want to use this bullet). I guess what Im asking is if I do the .5 increments what am I looking for in shot groupings to work up a Solid Load. 4.im mostly trying to develope a load in a more efficent method that i used before without shooting 100's and 100's of rounds. Id love to get the gun to have a sold hunting load with these 95 gn Nosler's i have because of availability for me without ending up shooting the life out of the gun doing so. And im sure there is more efficent methods than what im using. id aprecaite the help alot thanks leonard |

Some guys will use a method, where you load up a single cartridge of each powder load from min. to max. of a particular powder/bullet/col combo. Fire one shot of each charge into the same target. This will give a , say, one 10-shot group. Several of thses will form the tightest portion of the group, this will be closest to the sweet spot, eliminating the flyers from contention. This has to be done under the best range conditions, keep variables ti a min. Pick a load from the sweet-spot loads, and play with col , and dicide what works best for your rifle.

its a 243 Model 700™ VLS 26" heavy contour barrel (0.820" muzzle O.D.)
that said from what i can see i can chamber from the clip with bullets into the lands. but id just like to know what averages as the most consistant sweet spot off the lands. i can see where your going with the min max 1 shot paterns and i wish i had thought of this before. like i said before im trying to stay away from the 200 round search for the right load because it kills the life of the gun if you have to do that afew times. |

What Boxhitch is describing to you is called a "Ladder test". Mondo info on the net on how its done. 200yds works best if your doing boattails. As for oal load as far out as you can and still have good feed out of your mag. Definatly do this of a rock solid bench with front and rear rest. Foul your barrel with a few shots before you start. Walk up and mark each shot with a number or the grains. Im betting hyour going to find your sweet spot a grain or so below max so save your rounds and start 5% below max and go up 1/2gr at a time. Allow to cool between each shot.
