Angry What am I doing wrong?

OK i have been reloading for a while now, never had any major malfunctions. Just started to reload for my 270WSM.

A fired casing fits in my gun, a resized case does not. the case has been cut to specs, chamfered, and de-burred. So.. I figured it was a faulty die, not the case, unless Hornady sent me a faulty second die body. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? If I can't get this figured, it's gonna cost me a small fortune for factory premium ammo. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a fairly common problem with the short mag cartridges.

The problem is with the fairly straight-sided cases. As you know the diameter of a loaded cartridge has to be a little smaller than the diameter of the chamber it is being loaded in. During firing the case expands to fit the chamber then springs back a just a bit which allows for easy extraction. When you re-size the case the body is squeezed back to a diameter close to what it was before being fired. The problem with the short mags is that during this process the shoulder can sometimes be pushed forward enough that the re-sized case is just a bit too long to fully chamber. Additionally too little lube - or none at all - inside the case neck can pull the shoulder forward when the expander ball is pulled from the case.

How to cure this problem?

First off set up your die in your press so that die comes into full contact with the shell-holder just as your ram reaches the top of it's stroke. (Ideally you want the shell holder to touch the die and have the press handle "toggle over centre" at the same time to exert maximum pressure on the case being sized.) Also make sure the inside of your case necks are well lubed.

If this still doesn't solve the problem you can have a machine shop turn off .002" or so off the top of a shell holder or the bottom of the die. Some guys report good luck doing it at home using a file or sander but accuracy may not be too good.

BTW, With all this said I do have to assume your problem is not that the bullet is not seated out too far that it is being jambed into the rifling before the bolt can be closed.

Cariboo nailed it. I had the same problem with my 300wsm if I didn't lube inside the case mouth.

I use RCBS case lube or powdered graphite. I tumble my cases after using the case lube. Cases that I am only neck-sizing and are not dirty enough to tumble get dipped in graphite. (You can get graphite by ordering the Redding dry neck lube which is nothing more than good old graphite. )
