Thumbs up Gold River this summer.

Hey guys, I have found out recently that our family is heading over to Vancouver Island this summer for a fishing trip with some people. We are going to a place called Gold River. My dad went to Gold River last summer and caught some good spring salmon. Has anyone been there before and had a good run at some big fish? I am pretty pumped, two summers ago my family went to Bamfield and we had a blast catching some big springs. We are really into fishing, we got our classic Boston Whaler and everything. Can't wait!

Talk to you guys later. Cheers! BCJ Anthony.

Cheers...

I have fished extensively in the Gold River area. When you mention Gold River do you mean the river itself or, what I believe you mean, is out on the ocean which is really Nootka Sound. Let me know which it is and if you wish some information.

I am Canadian. Let's go fishing, eh!

Hey FishingGuide, yes you are right it is the Nootka Sound. I dont think it is the river because my dad went last summer and it was ocean.

Well two summers ago we went on a big trip to Bamfield, so would the Nootka sound be similar? When we went to Bamfield we also had alot of fun dock fishing, I sware I caught at least 14 fish from the dock. We would open up a muscle, put abit of the meat on a small hook, catch a perch, use dead perch and buzz bomb bottom, hook a flounder all from scratch bait . That was always good fun. Very fun trip with some big springs landed.

Bamfield is just around the corner from Cape Beal Lighthouse and the open Pacific. Not sure where you are staying on your Gold River holiday. If right in Gold River then you will have much calmer water as it is 20 miles from the open ocean. However, IMHO, you would want to go out into Muchalat Inlet to fish the big springs. It is a world class fishery. One morning I caught 4 salmon in 45 minutes and not one was under 20 lbs while the biggest was over 40 lbs.

Let me know where you are staying and I can give you some specific places to fish. If you don't have a spot I could recommend Cougar Creek Campground (camping) or, if they have room, Critter Cove for lodging. Gold River is a bit out of the way from the main fishing areas.

Thx for the recommendations, my dad also said Cougar was a good spot. My dad was wondering what you use up there. Plugs, or something like a model number? Not too sure but something based on that, mostly what to use.

From what I know of the area, there is a fishing closure on the salt chuck directly around the waters of Gold River. You have to travel several miles from the town to get to where you can legally fish. The time of year can make a difference as well as to the fishing results. If you are into bottom fish, cod, etc., you should have no problems, regardless of the season.

There is some good lake and river fishing in the area though, with several lakes being stocked with trout.
