Lake Trout?

Can someone recommend the best lures for Lake trout? I am heading to a lake with some good fishing for them, but not sure what lures to use?

thanks

I've fished a lot for Lake Trout in Northern Sask and we always used big Len Thompson spoons, 6"-8", in 5 of Diamonds and Gold/Silver or Hammered brass/silver. In those days we didn't use downriggers so most of the spoons were weighted but we also fished Gibbs Gators on a dropper.

I imagine that plugs, like the Lymans, Tomics and J-Plugs would slay them as well.

Where are you headed? Fishing from a boat or shore?

Thumbs up

Another method for Lake Char - AKA Lake trout - is to drift in a boat jigging a 3"-4" buzz-bomb.

This lets you get down to where they are during the summer without using gear.

I also have had great luck trolling a spoon using lead-core line instead of a downrigger.

Some of the most fun I have had with Char is to troll a leach-fly around the edges of weed beds during May and June. Anyone who says a Laker doesn't fight should try a 5 - 10 pounder taken on a fly rod in less than 10 feet of water!

Had a lot of success with big flatfish-orange and black-black and silver or frog type- 4"-6"-use sliding weights to get down to them.

Forgot about jigging. We used to fish BIG yellow and white maribou jigs tipped with bait for Lakers.

I too will be trying for some lakers soon. We will be camped at Horse lake for a week in august. I really want to get em on the fly so my plan is to row around with a full sink line and use different streamer patterns.Hope it works.

Get out in front of the Bonanza Resort and find the 2 "sunken islands" a couple hundred yards offshore. The water breaks off from shallows 1-8 feet deep down to 200 feet of water. Drag a fly around the edge of the drops early and late in the day and you will have a good chance at a good sized char. (Or maybe one of the 5 pound kokanee resident in that lake)

XCARIBOOER,

Let me start off there is no fish in Horse Lake, I hear McLeese Lake has a huge stock of them

What week are you going to be at Horse As I will be up there putting on the roof for my pops I just hope it ain't an OVEN up there then

Hmmmm I have caught Huge Lakers on Green Frogs #5-6's along with salmon gear.

Tom Mac plugs also would work, as Boo said with lead line, but if you use lead line, I run at least 50feet of mono to the lure from the lead line.

The only problem with big Lakers is they taste like MUD, I don't target the biggy's anymore as they are slow growers. I have a picture of my grandfater with a 35-40lbs+ Laker caught from Horse, looks like a HUGE Spring that you would hook on the Fraser.

Thanks for the tips. We will be at Mahood lake at the provincal campground from about the 7th to the 12th. Hope to try my luck on the river between Canim and Mahood.Supposed to be good dry fly fishing this time of year. Then we move to Horse lake resort for a family reunion for the next week. Should be fun (except for the reunion part)

in lakes with kokanee a 6" or bigger silver apex will work wonders. A lot of the favourites have been mentioned, five of diamonds, plugs etc. I have found mettallic blue and silver spoons to be quite good as well, the bonus with all these is that in lakes with both ranbows and char you have an equal shot at either!

Good luck
Chris
