Danny I herd they where going to have a two week opening then for the next 12 years total shut down in the Fraser for Sockeye.

I myself will not take part in the Flossing fishery for Sockeye, as I would rather hook them out in the chuck.

I think it should be closed as it is nothing more then a meat fishery, flossing to me is the legal form of poaching with 12+ foot leaders and huge single hooks.

My Guide buddies say that the fish cops are asking people not to use such long leaders

What's wrong with a "meat fishery"? The fish are going up to die, so why not allow people a few fish for the table?
That said, I prefere catching them in the chuck, but I'm not about to turn my nose at bottom bouncing.

Well for one the reason they are going to close the Sockeye down is because of BBing.

How can you call that ethical fishing using a 12 foot leader and a 3/0 hook along with a 3oz round ball, a tuff of wool and bounce it off the bottom feel something and give a rip. All the hooks are in the side of the mouth of a fish, I never knew a fish bit a hook sideways? Along with under the chin, side of the head in the dorsal fin. Or better yet in the @$$, but I guess to SOME THEY ALL TASTE THE SAME.

To me that is Poaching, I'll admitt I did it once as some guys took me out there to see the damage it does that was the last time.

Now with BBing sure use that method on the Fraser but the problem now is people are taking that style of fishing to other rivers.

I hope DFO does what they say there where going to do and make it max 3 foot leader. I hook more fish short floating then with long stuff, I guess I was shown the old school of fishing as it is for the fun of it. If I need fish that bad I will go down to the Fish Market and buy it.

I guess my ethical way of doing stuff is a lot different then some

I guess that is another reason I joined www.screamingreels.ca over the others out there, as 99% of the guys on there are ANTI FlOSSERS.

Bottom bouncing for sockeyes is fine as long as your not endangering certain runs, these guys that use very short leaders are flossing them as well ,just not as effective. If you do not wish to partake in bottom bouncing stay away from the river, the fact is 99 percent of sockeye will not bite once they hit freshwater,a guy that shoots a bison for meat and pays for it is not ethical in some peoples eyes but in my eyes if you take any game in a legal way and do not waste the meat it is fine. And I think if your well equipped, catching a salmon in the chuck doesnt take too much talent.

hey SW, i do respect your views, but for some that dont have the means to fish the chuck, thats the only way to get a few salmon for the table. Its not like theres a huge limit and were killing the run. Personally i drive from the OK to hope, catch my limit a day or 2 and go home with enough salmon to last me quite a while. If you shut that fishing down ill bet alot more people will just buy it from the indians, hence the same fish die, but a huge resource and great passtime is gone!

Well enjoy it while you can as this will be the last sockeye opening for at least 12 years on the Fraser.

I myself would rather eat other Salmon then Sockeye over rateted IMHO.

Markk,

I don't have a problem with people fishing for Sockeye but just the style of it, sort of like Hunting Bear's around apple trees or deer in Corn Patch's. You would be against some one hunting that way so you see my point on this issue. If guys weren't using the 12+ foot leaders I wouldn't have a problem.

Good luck as she is open now, as they say let the gong show begin.
