Sockeye definately bite in freshwater. I've gotten them on the vedder and I even got one on a spinner in the Stave (a Fraser fish) about 8 years ago. They bite flies and krill on the Harrison as well.
Someone will find a reliable way to get sockeye to bite in the lower fraser in the next few years. |

I have caught tons of salmon on the fly including sockeyes,I bet you would be suprised to learn that alot of these fish are unintenionaly flossed in the mouth when they are stacked up and the fly on your sink tip catches them on the swing, also guys float fishing with short leaders snag alot of fish with out knowing it,I know a small percentage of sockeye bite in clear water,my discussion is all about fraser River sockeye,if you tell me how to catch them without bottom bouncing I will listen.

Swede,I just stated I have caught alot of salmon in fresh water on the fly,I do not doubt for a second that sockeye chased your fly or bit them,I also believe alot of salmon are accidently flossed with a fly in the mouth,go to the Squamish river when the pinks are running,or the Stave when the chum are coming up.My comments are regarding the sockeyes in the Fraser, why do you think with all the bar fisherman out there you rarely hear of a sockeye being caught,I can use my Spey rod with lead core line a short leader and a fancy fly and catch sockeye all day,but guess what they are still flossed.I ask you have you got away to effectively catch Fraser river sockeye with out purposely flossing or intentionally flossing them if you do then please let me all the anglers and fishing guides know.

I think that you could get sockeye in the lower river, say around Derby Reach, slowly trolling a small glo flasher/hootchie combo upstream or sitting on anchor with the same gear in a spot that had enough current to get the gear working. I would use lots of dummy flashers on droppers as well. No reason this shouldn't work, they get them at Sandheads doing just this. If they bite on Tuesday at Sandheads why wouldn't they bite on Wednesday at Derby Reach? I'm going to get my boat out in the next week on the lower river and try just this. I'll let you know how I make out. |

Hi,I what is the diffrence in water clarity at Sandheads compared to derby reach? They dont exactly nail tons of them at Sandheads either,Sockeye are plancton eating fish they dont bite well at the best of times,I think your chances catching them trolling in dirty water would be slim to none but I would love for you to prove me wrong.
