Trout Fishing in the cariboo advice?

Has anyone had any success fishing Rail Lake close to Lac La hache in early winter?

I hunt the area from a friends cabin and would like to take my dad fishing there nov 11-14. It doesnt look like it will be iced over by then.

Any suggestions what to use for trout? We havent been fishing for a long time and were thinking about trolling flies behind the small aluminum we will borrow.

Thanks for any advice!

Rhys

Rhys.."generic" help...leeches...with 8 pound leaders as strikes can be savage this time of year. Also large dragon patterns can be effective and finally a small baitfish imitation ie muddler minnow...red sided shiner etc..

I do not know if that lake has winterkilled but if not my # 1 go to fly would be a leech.....

I have driven by Rail many times and wondered how it would be but have never stopped.Let us know how it was.And yeah, leech or dragon would be first to try.

easy....ya havnt caught any trout yet.... but these are ace patterns I tied myself and they have caught some pretty big trout..hmmm this year the biggest was over 10 pounds at Dragon lake...and my "go to " pattern.

In fall the fish move ito the shallows which is the feeding zone from drop off right into 18 inches of water to eat everything in site in preperation for winter. So the regular shrimp warners baggie etc and minnow patterns and of course leeches...

Please remember to go slow and move the rod back and forth trying to impart that undulating leech like /worm movement....I would be fishing just the shallow side of the drop off and you should be "ticking the bottom" every now and then..keep turning the boat every 25 yards or less so the flies rise and fall inside rods fly will fall and outside will rise on each turn .Of course if ya can fly cast? cast and count down untill each cast you can slowly bring the fly in close to the bottom without dredging up weeds from the bottom.

These flies have some lead wire around the shank of the hook so when you give a pull on the rod and then relase/stop the pull and MOVE THE ROD TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE BOAT to allow the leech to "free fall" the weight ONLY on the front 1/3 of the shank pulls the head of the leech fly down ..diving and then when you pul ..it pulls the head up...repeatedd slowly it imparts a life like leech undulating movement..not just a straigh pull through the water.

Right fly...rifgt place ..right time....your good to go..also keep to the 6 # or 8# leader about 8 or 9 feet long..try ensuring whatever line you use ..mono with weights( weights 8 feet from fly ) or full sinking fly line you are down 8 feet...and hang on the strikes can be ferocious... and ENJOY .

Hey Guys, I am back, what can I say, no fish and no deer The flies however were amazing Once again a big thank you to Steven.

Sorry for the late reply we came home in the worst part of the storm we had recently, a terrible drive back and a terrible drive there with about 2.5 hours in sideways blowing snow heading up, then rain and wind coming down. I have been immersed in school trying to finish up some stuff i missed when I was away.

The first day we had up there we managed to turn the little 12 foot aluminum sears boat from 1970 into a veritable ice breaker, busting through the 20-30 feet of ice on the shoreline to get to open water, we fished as Steven directed at the shelf where the lake bottom dropped off, looking for hungry fish, we trolled slowly for 4 hours trying everything in the bait box with no success. On our return to the dock at the cabin we found that the ice had advanced another few feet and closer to shore had thickened. We decided we should take the boat out and call it a day. This was a great idea since that night we had about 10 inches of snow, then the winds picked up and early that morning the lake froze over effectively ending our fishing.

It was a great trip though, with my dad getting his first opportunity to ride a snowmobile and an ATV for the first time at age 60. he loved it. They allowed us to get out and see a lot more of the area then if we were just on foot. I managed to get him to my hunting spot that take 45 minutes to walk to in only about 15 minutes, i stashed the atv and we got to spend a good 3 hours out in the area i hunt. It was great to see him so excited about the animal tracks, we never saw any game but it was a great few days in the woods with dad.

Thanks again Steven for your help, I'm sure they will catch me some fish in the future with them.
