Cheeko.........how small are you talking? IMHO.....if you are talking "central coast" rough weather I would not go to small and I would likely look to something that has a center console etc.

Do you have a budget you are working with?

I agree with MB Boy. Most locals in Rivers use the same Hoursten Glass boats the lodges use as general get around boats. For work they use aluminum work skiffs. Usually center consol and between 16 to 20 feet. Coast guard has large center consol hardbottom inflatables but they are pricey and they would be at least 18 to 20 feet. 16 to 18 foot lunds and lifetimers work pretty good to. Go with at least a 40 hp outboard. During winter outflows it can blow 90 (hurricane force) down the inlet. Two to three foot chop from the west is not uncommon in the summer. If you plan on beaching your boat on a rising tide and working or beachcoming rubber boats don't wear well on the rocks. Nice place though. Lived there many many years. Went all over the place in my 18 foot center consol welded aluminum workboat. If you go aluminum make sure its welded and not rivited. Look after yourself. Good medical help can be hours if not days away depending on the weather. Good luck with your selection......Tom

Cheeko,

I have spent many days on the water, let me tell you, small is not what you want.

Hurston's are a good boat made in North Van, but there is one better IMHO, it is made in Richmond Double Eagle. I had one that was 16' with a 90hp on it, I put that thing through the test's to when I had it.

If you say what your budget is then we might have a better idea, i just picked up a 22' Rinell.
