blow flies

how do you keep them away?

i use cotton sheets so they can't lay their eggs onto the meat

i saw this product for black flies and mosquitos.
ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent

i wish they made something for blow flies!

cover the meat with cheese cloth and then spray it down liberally with citric acid and water mixed. the high acid content burns the little bastards feet and they wont lay any eggs. i buy it in powder form and mix it in the field applying it witha spray bottle. Its never failed me and it seems easier to cover every square inch better than pepper. i have also soaked the game bags in the mix as well sprayed quarters down then placed them in the bag that works well too. On a lighter note my best friend just had a brain tumor removed and has 55 staples in his head from the surgury. I keep telling him im going to spray the wound with that mix to keep the blow flies off his head, somehow he doesnt think that would feel too good. its gotta be better than blowfly larva

im not sure what the concentrations are I bought a bunch of little packets from a U brew store before they went out of business.....i just pour a couple per spray bottle. I also out of habit called the bags i use cheese cloth bags.
the bags i use were made by my mom and are just cotton sheets that are sewn up.. the cotton will still breath and reg bags have mesh that the eggs might be passed thru...paranoid maybe but im a fan of no maggots. spray the meat and bags, cool the meat asap as well as you can and seal the meat up tightly before the flys can even get on it. I suppose any lemon juice or vinegar would work too, anything to lower the ph. this is just what has worked for me in the past im sure there are some others that have some things that have worked for them as well. now if only my bro could draw a moose tag damnit.....ill still come out and spend my thousand dollars to hunt mule deer but even this non resident is P.O'd at your draw system. even here in onterrible we have a better system for moose tags.

cotten sheets are about the only thing i know for sure sealed up well but still let air flow.
Black Pepper doesnt seem to work, vinger is good for killing bacteria but it doesnt keep away the blow flies.

i wonder if something like a jalapeno pepper spray would work ? mexican flavoured venison
