Smile First black bear sighting of the spring.

On the way to Quesnel this morning I had the first blackie of the year try and commit suicide by dashing across the highway. Thankfully for both of us the big guy made it across in one piece.

This early spring sure is a big contrast to last year's never ending winter that dragged on until June.

Hard to tell. I was doing ~110 kph and he was doing at least 50!

I would guesstimate him as a 5'-5 1/2' bear.

I thought you waited until noon before you hit the booze Gary?

A few reports around Kelowna of bear activity too, including grizz tracks in the snow up Myra! That should create some excitement for the eco-tourists on the KVR this spring!

I went for a good long hike yesterday, (beautiful day for it), into some popular bear country, where they are always seen in the spring, year after year. I was really suprised but I didn't even see a single turd from one. That was wierd.

Course I also didn't see any deer, and they are usually plentiful, especially the does, so go figure..maybe it was too hot for them already.

There are definitely out from Squamish up through Whistler. Saw a smaller one while driving up Hwy 99 just north of Squamish on Thursday.

They also have a bear trap out right down in Whistler Creekside, so there must be a few waking up in that area too.

The west coast of the Island is very active with them now. Quite a few are out and about, the grass is greening up on the old roads and the skunk cabbage is up and growing.

It snowed 3" on Woss on Monday and they are calling for more this weekend

Cheers

There are a few being spotted out here in the Valley. I watched one on the hill behind work yesterday. Lots of new grass growing. It will likely be a busy weekend for bear.

Last week in Maple Ridge

There was a photo of a bear and her 2 cubs that came knocking (literally), on the patio door of a Maple Ridge resident. She reckons the bears were attracted to the smell of the popcorn she was making, coming out of her stove exhaust!

She had a picture of "the little one", which was almost as tall as the whole bloody patio door! This was some time last week, I think.
