Question How Confident Are You regarding your LEH selections?

Hi All,

Just thought I'd toss this one out there. For me, it has been no less than seven dry seasons as far as drawing an LEH tag in BC. And what with tossing 6 or 7 entries in each of those years, I guess I'm getting kinda jaded with the process. It ain't that I only subscribe to those hunts with undesirably high odds, although I freely admit there are a couple of those each year. But, I do my homework, and have always tried to get in on those with somewhat better odds. Simply doesn't seem to work for me...

Yesterday, the outfitter I work for in Alberta called. Seems he wants me there a tad early this year, mulies as well as whitetails to find for The Ladz. And that of course means if I bite that I will be away for much of the time the tags I applied for will be open. A conundrum? Nope, given past and recent history, I will be downright amazed should I draw even a single tag, so quite willingly accepted the offer to get in on the show east of the Rockies a tad early. And, in the extreme case that lightening actually does strike and I get either the Van Isle Elk or Sheep tag of my dreams, I can always hustle back for the time that would require

Thus, considering this matter kinda lead me to wonder what others think of their chances of success, and whether they base that on their history of trying.

Any Thoughts?

Wondering,
Iron

I am batting about 50-50 on mule deer doe tags.

I have only "won" a moose draw once in the last 20 years.

I have never drawn sheep, elk, goat or bison.

I am pretty confidant I will have to hunt general open seasons again this year! LoL

My chances of getting drawn are based on the odds. The whitetail doe hunt was 4:1 odds so I have a 25% chance of drawing. Moose is about a 12% chance and sheep about the same. So I dont expect any. Bonus if I get one.

I went years and years without getting one, then I got a moose draw 3 years ago (8:1) then sheep 2 years ago (2:1) and last year I got a bison tag, 17:1 (after 12 years of applying).

So like I said I am not holding my breath for any tags. Regardless of the LEH draw I am still sheep hunting the first week of the season then hunt some deer and moose with my dad in Ocotber followed by the last week of sheep season (Oct 15-20). November will be chasing deer again in another region.

So when you look at it like that, we are pretty lucky to live in BC and I could care less if I get a draw.

Alex

This LEH system is a disgrace and must be eliminated in favour of GOS for B.C. residents, ONLY. I get REAL tired of being expected to stand in line and then "maybe" get anj opportunity to buy a tag to hunt in the land where I was born and my ancestors pioneered.

In the Kootenays, more than 100 Moose tags are given to the Guide-Outfitters and there is NO open season for people, like me, whose families built this province in the 19th Century. I have just had enough to reading how some rich, fatass Yankee drove here and with a GO, shot a* big Moose, when I will never get one. This is a travesty and must be stopped....no matter what it takes.

I have done OK on LEH, but, I find it a totally bullschitt situation and one that the GOABC is strongly in favour of and they seem to run the Fish and Wildlife Branch, just as the big foreign corporations in "wood" have always run the B.C.F.S.

Time to ban ALL foreign hunting and angling in B.C. as we need the resources for ourselves.

I just don't feel right with banning other hunters and fishermen just because they don't live here.....in my mind it would much more equitable to make them all apply for LEH like we have too. After a few years of that they would just go hunt elsewhere anyhow.

Question

well i just checked the regs and there's around 1000 leh's for moose in the kootenays . so if the guides are getting a 100 permits thats only 10 % . I would imagine that there employing a number of workers . last time i was up in the region unemployment was high . So maybe its not such a bad thing .

I have been very lucky

9 Bull moose draws in the last 12 years, and in an area with 3+:1 odds, finally got my Roosie elk in 07, after 26 years, have had goat, doe and grizz draws when applying. Last year was only the 5th time in 27 years that I did not at least get one draw.

I do find that if I fill in the hunter questionair, the LEH gods smile on me more......

and I DO use black pen...

Cheers

The odds keep getting worse over the years.......at 10 to 1 it will could take twenty years........20 years to shoot a doe in my backyard seems a tad pathetic.

Hum

O.K.
So we should all have a little bit of luck once in a while. But even the luckless ones here will get one sooner or latter -- I applied for a Moose hunt that the odds were 1-1 and didn't get it --go figure that one out. Anyways HANG in there one year (as I did) you will open the LEH God's envelope and it will read BISON yea. BTW a Bison tag will ruin the whole years hunt because you will be super careful NOT to get hurt before the hunt -- on the Bison hunt All bets are off right B.C. Boy (Dave)

P.S. This year I will get them all because I have nothing else to do and can't even walk properly yet so just to torture me more bring it on LEH Gods

Al

I think my daughter stands a good chance at getting drawn again this year..last year she got drawn for ELK Moose and Doe.

The Elk tag (also Doe, Sheep and Youth Moose) i put her in for this year is on my buddies property up North for either sex, odds are 1.1-1. 600 plus acres to hunt.
