I have a couple of questions about a PAL and gun ownership

I am currently in possession of a Savage Arms 30-30. It was my grandfathers hunting rifle that was passed down to my dad, that was passed down to me after my father passed away.

I currently do not have my PAL or CFSC course though. I want to get the gun registered so I don't loose it for any unforeseen circumstances, but I have a few questions about how this works.

Am I able to register the rifle before I get my PAL, or is a PAL required before I can register the rifle?

I am in the process of getting info to do the CFSC before I fill out my PAL application.

I am currently in Quebec (Montreal), so I'm not sure how that will affect anything. I know sometimes the laws in Quebec can be different from the rest of Canada.

Thanks in advance.

Currently, gun possession with no PAL = Illegal. You have obviously left the gun in the care of a licensed pal holder, until you complete the course. I wouldn't bet on waiting until the registry is supposedly tanked. Once you have the pal, you can transfer to your name.

A friend of mine allowed his to expire. The RCMP made a trip out to his place and confiscated all his firearms. He had 2 options:

Renew, and they would hold the firearms untill he did so.

OR

Renew and he could store his firearms at a friends place, untill he did so.

Just last week, my wife got a letter from the RCMP informing her that her POL had expired back in Oct and that any firearms she had in her possession were in fact illegal. It also stated that that the RCMP would be coming to the house to get them. Also that she would be charged with having illegal firearms. on one paragraph of the letter it stated for her to call the CFC to explain the problem. We had 30 days to get this sorted out or the RCMP would be visiting us.
Back in June, just before we moved to BC, my wife decided that she wouldn't be hunting anymore as she had new interests (grandkids) and also knowing that her POL was to expire in Oct, so she transfered the rifles to my PAL.
So, when I called the CFC last week to straighten this out, I was told that when one of the rifles was put on her POL, for some reason, the CFC had in fact made out 2 registeration cert's.Both had all the same info except different serial #'s. So when she had transfered the one rifle to me, it still looked like she had one rifle registered. When her card expired, they figured she had a firearm yet. Anyways, we got it all straightened out.
