If you could design a new cartridge.....

If you could design a new cartridge, what would it look like? And what would be your reasons for doing so?

It would have the shell from a 300-378, necked in to fit a .277 calibre bullit.

I would want to try shooting yotes at 1km with it.

Not too much out there that hasn't been tried before.

A true 338 in a WSM case should duplicate 338-06 performance and that would be a good thing to have in a light little short-action rifle.

I used to have a Garand M1 many years ago, and found that was a great little gun for going out plinking, and target shooting.
I would like a cartridge that uses the same .30 carbine case, with a .22 bullet. This way you could reload your own (cheap) ammo, and have a .22 that can travel further without the bullet drop a regular .22 suffers from. Shot out of a semi-auto, it would be a great gun for target practice, or shooting cans, etc, out to 200+ yards. Kind of a lightweight varmint rifle.

Huh! In my previous post I mentioned a willdcat cartridge that I would like to see, and here a week later a fellow in New Zealand has produced, and tested one. How ironic.
Here is his post from today regarding this wildcat..sounds pretty sweet!

Why not pick a caliber with a better BC like 6.5 or .284?

I think a 35cal. fitted into a 300WM. case would be a good thumper for B.C.

Basically if you want a real flat shooter, a 7mm or 6.5 bullet will have abetter Ballistic Coefficient than a .270 bullet therefore producing less drop and less wind drift than the .270 bullet.

But they will all be barrel burners and there is likely a better way to get form A to B. 1000 yard competitors don't shoot .277-378 Weatherbys.

Thats true they don't, but there are some redundant cartidges on the market already. The point of this thread is to have fun, and not judge anyones idea. Its obvious you have extensive knowledge in handloading so use that knowledge to come up with your idea of a design and post it on this thread. Don't use it to criticize others.

The 35-300 Winchester was made by wildcatters. You can get reamers from some of the tool companies and special order dies from RCBS

I think a 9.3x338RCM would be a great medium bore big game rifle.

There are lots of good bullet choices and available in the reliable and rugged Ruger action with a simple rebarrel and ream.

The 9.3 Barsnes Sisk would be pretty close. Basically a 9.3x350 Remington- 9.3x62 performance in a short action.
