late season
Did anybody else make it out for the "second season" opener in region 5?
I went out for a walk in the woods with a friend yesterday. -22 degrees with a bit of wind, but once we got into the trees, it wasn't bad. We saw 4 bucks (3 of them were 4 points, 1 3x3) and a couple of does. We were travelling between a couple of spots in the truck when I thought I saw something heading into the bush from an old logging skid trail. We stopped and I headed off to see what it was. Buddy went in on another skid trail about 30 yds back. I managed to push 2 bucks and a doe past him. He connected on this guy at 40 yds range with his Ruger 77 in 7mm Rem mag. |

Nice buck!
One of the advantages of hunting close to home is that you are only a quick trip away from a couple of buckets of hot water which make gutting a deer at -20c much nicer.

We were in the vicinity of Big Lake yesterday. Once again I had the forethought to bring a jug of water and rags along for the trip. Stayed fairly warm in the back seat of the truck. We did a quick field-dressing on the buck in the field. It was hung up in the barn at buddy's place last evening and the ragged edges were dressed up. It was a 50 yard skid to the edge of the road, then lifted into the truck. This guy was still all swollen up in the neck, but didn't smell too bad at all. The second buck had a wider rack, but was short of mass. He and the doe went past my friend before he had a chance to get ready for a shot. He was ready when this guy came out of the brush. We did see a doe being chased around by a little forkhorn buck. She was going around in circles trying to avoid him. Rut must still be on! |
