Neck shots?????

I have seen many deer get shot in the neck and drop. I eaven shot my elk in the neck and it droped. But some people say that the only way you will drop them by hitting them in the neck is if you hit them in the spine but I don't really believe that cause I have seen alot of deer get droped I am sure they did not all hit the spine.

Dylan,
Dont be refering to me when you say that because I know you dont have to hit the spine, I just think it isnt nessesary to shoot the neck when you have a perfect shot at the chest. I feel a good heart or lung shot is far more dependable and ethical. Just my thoughts on it

Ya but if it is not a big deer then a neck shot will drop it and you do not have to do the work of trying to track it

About 10 years back, I was hunting moose in some logging cuts that were logged over the winter before. As I walked along the edge, just at daybreak, a bull moose jumped up and took off parelelle to me at about 70-80 yards.I thought to myself " this is gonna be easy I'll just pop him in the neck". I figured he'd drop right there and I'd drive my trike & trailor right to him & haul him out. Well, at the shot he lowered his heat about 4 feet, and kept right on motoring like he wasn't even shot. By the time I ejected that round and cycled another in, that moose was almost 200 yards from me. This shot went thru the ribs and anchored him. I've never shot anything in the neck since.

The neck or head of a big-game animal is a very small target with little room for error. When everything comes together they work like magic and the animal will drop like a sack of potatoes. Miss the spine, brain, or jugular however and you have a mortally wounded animal that you probably will not recover.

Take these shots if you want to but be aware sooner or later you will have an animal escape which will end up feeding the coyotes and ravens.

I wacked a moose in the neck at about 150 yards (30-06 180gr). It dropped like a sack of spuds, but got back up again, and started to head off, although somewhat slowly. Second shot to the shoulder and it was all over.

You take a chance with a neck shot..

X2!Neck shots are very B.S most times.Boiler room for me,99.999% effective.Heart/lung shots have been working great for me for 37 years.I like looking at a full freezer

I am over 60 years old and can outwalk, out hunt anybody and have never owned an ATV. In my 49 years of hunting with my 36 different custom made rifles and handloaded cartridges and my 23 high end expedition tents, 16 top of the line sleeping bags, 43 pairs handcrafted boots from Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and Austria, roomful of high end hunting gear and thousands of solo experiences I have never ever and never would advocate shooting an animal in the neck. I am also the best reloader, best shot and smartest guy on the interweb and that speaks volumes about the foolishness of such shot placement.

I guess to each his own.

I personaaly prefer to aim behind the shoulder. Their is less margin for error, and if you are off a little, at least the animal will still go down.

Ya that is where I normally aim but if the animal I wounded that is where I would shoot it so that It would not suffer
