................... or at the very least large mule deer! LoL

I have a feeling this little carbine will be seeing a lot of miles this fall.

I have the same gun in a 270 and love it, I use it for deer on those days I plan to hike a bunch.

Nice! I have one in the same calibre, different make though...and it's 92 years old. I plan to plunk a WT flattop with it this year!

Apparently, the fellow who owned this little gun before my dad bought it from him in the 60's lived in Alaska, and killed Alaskan moose, caribou, and Alaskan brown bears with it! Both my brother and I shot our first deer with it.

Love those old Savage 1899's

I used to have one in 300 Savage and while the rifle is long gone I have kept a set of reloading dies on the bench just in case I decide to buy another.

It seems lately my plan of reducing the number of firearms in my safe has gone sideways. Sell one, buy two seems to be the way I am doing it now.

Off to a good start

Working up the first load for the new rifle.

Best group was just under 1" and the worst just over 1 3/4" Not too shabby at all!

Very nice rifle Boo! You have a real penchant for Rugers eh ;-) Are you one of those getting the new #1 in 303?

Pardon my ignorance, but why is a smaller bullet (.258) preferable over your 30 cal for grizzly of all things?

Hey Mark

The Grizzly reference was just a joke. I get a kick out of the hundreds of grizzly protection threads I have seen over the years on various hunting forums. I am really starting to think some people have an irrational fear of bears! LoL

This Ruger replaces the one you shot last fall as a friend of mine decided he had to have that one after shooting a 3 shot half-inch group with it at the range. After shooting it he put it away in his pickup and asked how much he owed me!

This new rifle is a special edition with only 250 of them built in this configuration and chambering. Out of those 250 only 30 were imported into Canada.

I have always loved the look and feel of the traditional Mannlicher stock and when I found one chambered in the old 250 Savage (250-3000) I had to have it. (I gave up rationalizing rifle purchases years ago! )

Power wise the 250 Savage is about equal to the 243 Winchester and is a bit more suitable for larger animals as it can shoot heavier bullets. In good hands the it is good to about 250 yards or so on deer-sized animals. With lighter varmint bullets it is a bona-fide 400 yard coyote rifle.

Heheh...thanks for the chuckle Gary, yes reading all the hunting forums, one does get a sense that there's quite a fear going for teddy bears. I think I remember reading somewhere about someone taking down a grizz with a 22 rifle? Some native girl or something like that?

As for your old 3-06, well, I don't blame your friend! Heck, I wanted to take that beauty home with me after that shot I made! It'll be awhile before I can afford a fine one like that one!

Sounds like that cartridge is a very good all-rounder for hunting. 250 to 400 yard shots is a pretty decent hunting range!
