As new member to this site I want to say hello and say that i have enjoyed what I have read so far, seems to be alot of knowledge on all aspects of hunting and fishing the outdoors. I would like to put in for leh spring grizzly and woulkd like to know if anyone has knowledge of the ospika river, in paticular is it runable in a river boat?or has any members been up that river by jet boat. Thanks in advanced.

I have spent quite a bit of time up there.
There is a canyon on the Ospika River which is un-runable for a jet boat only a few km up from the mouth of Williston Lake. Even before the canyon there's a smaller chute with rocks which make the Muskwa River can opener look tame. |

Went up the Ospika a number of years back. Got as far as the first bridge and didn't take the it past that. Looks good farther up but the shoot under the bridge looked like it might be tough coming back down so didn't attempt it.

Thanks guys, It doesnt sound to encouraging from the start, I wounder if you could drive around to ft ware and come back down that side of the lake then drive up the road that follows the ospika back up and dump a boat in a ways up that road?I dont know if i would want to leave my truck and trailer there. Also it looks like a person might find it game rich, which then leads you to believe that its been tried alot by jet boat, and if people are going up it some, that kind of secret doesnt stay quiet for very long. [or maybe it does]

I have been to the canyon years ago. The fishing was unreal where the other creek runs in. I have heard stories of people running the canyon but no real proof if it is true. It looked like may be able to go up but what goes up has to come down. I know guys have hiked from near there and went after goats in the 80's.

There is no place to put a boat in on the river upstream. Even if you managed to put one in, I wouldn't want to be leaving the vehicle with the Tsay Kay First Nations as regulars hunting there. The roads have all been deactivated and the road only goes up the Ospika River about 22 km to a dead end. That said, lots of guys go up there hunting in spring and fall. |

I've been up the Ospika 4 times moose hunting as a teenager with my father. We ran the canyon every time without incident. We went backward on the way down as it's easier to make quick adjustments. I know they've done a lot of logging up that way. Used to be that hardest part was making it across and up the the lake, due to rough water. Nice country, I haven't been up there in over 15 years, so things may have changed on the river.

I've been a short distance up the Ospika, then hiked up Steven's Creek for goats. It was a 25 hour hike (2.5 days) in and about 15 hours out. Toughest hunt of my life....also probably the best. Very wild country up high that few ever see.

Yeah I heard years ago that it was passable in normal water conditions. There was an article written about a Moose hunt there where they riverboated up thru the 1st chute past the rock and got a Bull there. BC Outdoors I think ran it.

Ospika River, Williston Lake, BC.
Yes the Ospika River is easily run in a suitable jet boat. I have been through the first canyon rapids a dozen times or so after you pass the first two creeks on the right side of the river after leaving the arm.
We used to camp below the canyon or at the first creek. Fishing was incredible then as was the amount of wildlife! However, this was before the road and bridges were pushed into the valley for logging but i doubt that any of this development has affected river access. |

I see someone reopened this thread. We did go up there that spring [end of may i think] and i wasnt prepared for what i saw, man the water was just boiling through the canyon, so much as my wife wouldnt ride the boat with me and instead walked around to where i picked her back up, scared the shit outta me, that being said the fall is much easier to go thru, justa gotta back down thru like someone mentioned before. Didnt get a chance to video but we did get some video latter on that trip.YouTube - River boat trip up Wiliston Lake. Great fishing and awesome scenery. Go if you get the chance.........never seen another boat or person that trip.

ospika river
I was up the ospika last week. The chute is not as bad as it looks. a couple hundred yards past the bridge you go to the far bank and crank it left and once your past that white water the rest of the river is a blast. Nice river to run for sure. I'll post a vid going through the tricky part when I figure out how.
