Sarah Palin goes hunting.

Although the show "Sarah Palin's Alaska", portrays her Dad and her as experienced hunters..I beg to differ.

Her Father, who states that he has been hunting for fifty years, (now age 72), failed to site in the rifle that he brought for Sarah. Four or five missed shots at a Caribou, even had Sarah convinced the gun wasn't sighted in properly. Fortunately the animal stood there until she was given another gun with which she finally dropped it. Darn good thing it wasn't a charging grizzly!
I was surprised as well that the Dad worked the action on her initial shots with the poorly sighted rifle, instead of her doing it..That strikes me as very odd, if she was in fact experienced.
I notice that the old guy hit the ground pretty hard while carrying his gun, when he slipped. No indication that he fired a test shot after that with it..wouldn't you? Still, he must be a tough old bugger, as he got up and kept on trucking, for what they estimate in the show to be 4-5 miles from there camp.

Another thing I question is, at the beginning of the show her father decides to take a "Varmint" rifle for Sarah, as she doesn't like recoil he states.. He doesn't mention what caliber it is, but I expect it was perhaps a .223, or something along those lines. Who knows though, perhaps it was a .22..
I wonder what the laws are in Alaska for hunting big game when it comes to the caliber used? No doubt a .223, would down a caribou as they are not a big animal, but still?? The old man packed a 7mm magnum by comparison.

I see in another show Sarah is shooting what looks like a 12Ga defender type shotgun, using buckshot. She didn't seem to have any issue with recoil when she was shooting that, so what gives..I know that load can punch you pretty good.

That same episode also had her out camping with the Kate Plus Eight bunch..Boy that Kate would sure be high maintainence..no wonder her husband split. Bitch Bitch Bitch the whole time..people may look at her in a slightly different light now. My Wife said she was acting like a spoiled teenager..lol I get a kick out of Sarahs Dad, when speaking about Kate. He said, "All she did was bitch from the minute she stepped off the plane".. Nice that the editor didn't edit out that bit..lol

I enjoy the show as you do get to see a lot of Alaska, and it's wildlife, but I gather they try overly hard to make Sarah look like a real country gal. I guess it is supposed to make the show more interesting. I can't stand her voice..sheesh that would give me nightmares..

We watched the caribou hunt show (I refuse to watch anything with that Kate ding-bat in it. ) and thought it was pretty good.

I agree that she, her dad, and their friend are not the experienced hunters they insinuate but I think any show that displays hunting in a positive light is great.

I don't know what cartridge the rifle her dad picked for her was chambered for but watching the recoil I don't think it was a .22 calibre centrefire. I do think pop's tumble down the hill where he landed on the rifle was responsible for the scope being out of whack but agree their obvious lack of wilderness hunting experience was showing when they didn't confirm the rifle's zero after the fall.

Assuming Sarah's second attempt with the buddy's .338 was a one shot kill as pictured (no wild shots edited out of the footage) I think her marksmanship was adequate.

Their boning job on the caribou seemed to result in a whole pile of little pieces but pop did mention that this was a new to him field dressing technique.

BTW, As a father who watched his daughter pull the trigger on an empty chamber while trying to kill a mulie last fall I can sympathize with him in an attempt to make sure the cartridge was properly chambered for his kid ...........

Haven't we all seen or done similar? or worse??

Its hunting. Good times.

Sarah is more intelligent than most. She is funny, charismatic, stylish, elegant and has a good heart. What a pretty momma, wife, grandmother, former governor of alaska, nearly vp of the usa. She has made history.

Thankfully, not yet..perhaps when I reach 72..

It should be interesting to see if she actually does take a run at the White House. She could kiss goodbye her country life if she does that, although she could make a new show. "Sarah Palin's Washington"

I was just happy to see a hunt on cable TV.

Sure the details are full of holes, why do you think it was a 'bou hunt?
They aren't the most cagey critters....Hunt them, you'll understand.

Politics or not, maybe, just maybe, someone who viewed it doesn't get to go hunting or never had any exposure and may think about taking it up, which is nothing but a good thing.

I'm surprised they didn't use the, waving the white hankerchief trick? Apparently the animals are very curious about it, and will practically walk right up to you.

Any hunting that is shown in a good light on TV is a huge bonus!

I think they did a good job about showing that hunting is not always easy, and that patience is required. As well, the narrative about the advantages of harvesting wild meat, etc..was pretty good.

I wonder how her husband made out on his moose hunt" Apparently that is what he was doing at the same time. Would have liked to have seen a bit of that too.
