Sheep/goat hunters 2 questions

when you go sheep/goat hunting and get your animal you are required by law to carry out all edible portions....so does that mean that if the animal was shot thru the front shoulders that you wouldn't have to pack them out??

if the grizz gets the meat from your animal, what happens at the compulsory inspection site....???....

yes you are required too....If you drop your animal by a shoulder shot and damage the front end then no you dont need to haul it out. That portion would be not edible

I guess that would encourage lots of shoulder shots? Anyone have an idea what happens if the bears get your meat??

if a bear gets your meat its gets eaten... nothing you can do about it. Compulsory inspection is just the head, not the meat. They just want to make sure its all legal and get stats, nanny/billy/mature etc so they have harvest information.

Pack out edible portions(minus ribs). Remember to keep a piece of hide attached and evidence of sex, a bucks head in the pack along with a boned out animal is NOT evidence of sex and species, you have to have at least one patch on the rest of the meat. If a bear eats it, if it goes bone sour etc its un-edible, you don't have to bring it out.

Mountain goats need to be shot through the shoulders, you need to anchor them or they will think they are supergoat and try to fly....

I still try to bring out the lower leg and as much meat as I can, so I cut away the damage and bring it out, but sometimes it can be more work than it is worth, so they stay.

As Kirby says, the CI is just the head/antlers/horns. The meat is an ethics/laws thing. I love mountain animal meat, so I take all I can get.

Cheers

I've got to agree with you on the meat quality issue. My son got a draw on a bighorn ewe a few years ago. It was some of the finest meat that I've ever had. I made a stew with the hamburger, adding some rosemary and veggies. Great eating!

I always aim for the front shoulder as you never know where one of these critters could end up. Multiple shots into the front shoulder really makes it a mess and there is hardly anything left.

That being said I take pictures of the wound to prove there was blood shot meat etc. If a grizz took my meat I would definately get as mush photo graphic eveidence as possible. Coming out with an empty pack and saying a grizz got the meat would not fly with most if not all CO's (expect a ticket).

The whole edible thing would be tough to prove in court mind you. I am sure there are guys that take all the blood shot meat and make burger out of it. Am I going to, no.

Maybe save some blood shot meat in the freezer next time you get some from a deer and save it for a court case where the CO says the meat was edible. Fry up a steak of blood shot shoulder meat in the court room and see if the CO will eat it Better yet make him take it home and see if his wife will eat it
