What calibre do you prefer to use on bear?

Bear season is just around the corner. I'm curious what your go to rifle is for bear, whether it be black bear or grizzley. Also, do you hunt bear for meat or trophy? If mainly for trophy, lets see some pics.

I've killed bears with

.223 Remington
30-30
.303 British
30-06
7mm RM
300WM
300WSM
338WM
375 H&H
375 Ruger

And maybe a few others I've forgotten about. They all work pretty good if you put a good bullet in the right place.

Black bears are a "soft" animal with light bones. As Clarke has shown they are fairly easy to kill if the bullet is placed correctly. With that said I personally like a cartridge with a good stout bullet that will exit from any angle and produce a good blood trail.

Bears are very hard to track even when mortally wounded as their thick coat soaks up a lot of blood which leaves a poor blood trail. The quicker they bleed out the better in my opinion. A 30 calibre - 300 Savage and bigger - shooting a 180 grain Partition or equal would be my advise.

Grizzly bear are a slightly different story. Usually they are a lot more muscular than a black bear and have heavier bones and - again in my opinion - can be harder to kill. My recommendation is again a 30 calibre minimum with a .338 of some flavour being better.

85g Slick Trick broadhead from my bowtech, with 12ga for back-up, lol.

I've only bowhunted bear, but I am with 'Boo on this one, you want to drop them in thier tracks if you can, its no fun tracking a wounded bear in the thick bush.

300 Win Mag with a 180 gr Scirocco Bonded bullet through the boiler room and out the opposite shoulder. Flipped him right off his feet, and he didn't get back up. Bullet was a complete pass through.

I wouldn't hesitate to dump a bruin with my 308 Win or my 7mm Rem Mag either. Good bullet in the right spot. Grizzlies, I'd like to have the 300 WM on hand, but the other two will do just fine if the situation arises.

I personally have never aquired a taste for bear. In fairness, it may have been the that my initial tasting was either poorly cooked, poor meat handling, or just that particular bear. Many swear by spring black bear, as a wonderful meal, so I should give it a second chance I suppose. (I have had bear meat that was done as a cured sausage, and it was really good).
I sure have had lots of opportunitys to harvest a bear over the years, and still pack a tag, just in case I need to use it, but I don't go out of my way to hunt them.

I would hope that the meat would not go to waste, if you decide to hunt them. I'm sure there are some good recipes/cooking methods you could learn.
I don't think grizzly is generally considered a great meat for the pot, and mainly hunted for trophy, but I imagine that some have eaten it before.

30 cal is what I use for most Big Game. 300 Win Mag is still my favorite out of all my different 30's though.
